What many logistic organizations like to call “Cold Chain”, is what I like to call “Temperature and Fresh Preservation Management in Logistics”. This is why DEISKO adjusted the basic slogans. From (2007) “Cold Logistics Solution Centre” into “International Temperature & Fresh Preservation Consulting / Solution partner in the logistical & agricultural sectors”
When you ask me: “What I think of the Agreement Transport Perishables?” I will say; It is a good step in the right direction preserving freshness. However, I believe the ATP is too short sighted. Mainly focussing on insulation and chilling equipment qualities used during transport alone. Instead of bringing more insights on how to improve the (APL) Arrangements Perishables Logistics, per product group.
Temperature management in preserving freshness will not be enough!
I’ll try to explain by a dive into the Produce (Fruits and Vegetable) logistics:
Too often temperature management alone was not be sufficient preservering freshness. As risks lay not just in keeping a steady (not fluctuating) temperature during transits from farm to fork mitigating the decay. Frequently we hear stories of fruits and vegetables having chilling (freeze) damaging due to excessive chilling. Preserving Freshness should contain more: maintaining the right temperatures and best ambient conditions (O2, CO2, N and H²C=C H² (Ethylene) concentrations / levels are for Produce (Fruits & Vegetables) but also for floral products essential. For storing and transporting these products (Star Cool reefer containers as example) have Controlled Atmosphere (CA) or CA+ (also known as Dynamic CA) as accepted operational equipment / systems. Preserving Freshness Nurturing Life
Undertanding what happens with post harvest “freshness”.
Understanding that a fruit or a vegetable once harvested in fact has started the process of decay. As the lifeline support (water & mineral supplies) got cut! This may contribute to a better understanding the values to take in account to keep the freshness of such product. With other words: slowing down, reducing the process of decay, are variables having an impact! They need to be controled.
Keep in mind that: Ripening process equals Process of Decay, whatever found as a (the) solution may very well be the source for (an)other problem / risk to set in. In the table below I tried to make this clearer.
Action – Reaction to take in account!
The golden rule is, was and will be, find the right balance in actions. Get the best out of it!
At DEISKO Ltd, we try to help you get best out of your operations. This article pinpoints on the need to get better standards and understanding dealing with agricultural products. Reducing waste, the CO2 footprint and making healthy food available for all, against a fair price!
